Legacy mobile technologies such as 3G are rapidly being phased out internationally as cellular mobile technology evolves. 3G services are intended for basic phone and data services only and are not suitable for video streaming or teleconferencing. To fully utilise the benefits of evolving technologies, old technologies must be gradually phased out, making place for more sophisticated technology- states BICMA.
The Bhutan Information Communication and Media Authority (BICMA) published a public statement on November 22, 2023, stating that Bhutan Telecom Limited (BTL) is in the process of shutting down the 3G base stations in its network.
The gradual elimination of old technology will offer the following benefits:
- Reduce the costs of sustaining and legacy infrastructures, as well as the outflow of cash for 3G vendor licences and infrastructure operation and maintenance.
- Prevent future difficulties of 3G network infrastructure unavailability when manufacturers gradually discontinue production of 3G network infrastructures.
- To stay up with worldwide mobile standards for improved mobile technology.
- In the future, the precious radio frequency resources that were used for 3G services can be reframed and used for spectral efficient mobile technologies such as 4G, 5G, and 6G.
