Legal Metrology

1) The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Third Amendment) Rules, 2022

The ministry of consumer affairs, food, and public distribution has released the notification dated 22nd Aug’22 called Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Third Amendment) Rules, 2022 to insert new clauses in rule 26 of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. This shall come into force w.e.f 1 st January 2023.
As per the notification, the exemption is given to goods like garments or hosiery to be sold in loose or open at the point of sale so that the consumer can inspect the products before buying. 

Such products shall bear the following details:

(i) Name and address of the manufacturer or marketer or brand owner or importer with the country of origin or manufacture in case of imported products.

(ii) Consumer care email id and phone number.

(iii) Sizes with internationally recognizable size indicators such as S, M, L, XL, XXL, and XXXL along with details in metric notation in terms of cm or m, as applied.

(iv) Maximum retail price of the package inclusive of all taxes in Indian currency.

The above information shall be displayed on the e-commerce website if such a product is sold
through e-commerce.

2) Extension in Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2022

An extension notice has been released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to already released Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2022 dated 28th March 2022.
As per the new notification, the new implementation date of this act is 1st Dec 2022, earlier it was supposed to come in
to the effect from 1st Oct 2022.
